The European strain “Carménère” was extinct in the nineteenth century by phylloxera, and was considered worldwide extinct. It was a French winemaker called Jean-Michel Boursiquot, who discovered that the grapes are still growing in the region of Chile, arguing that there were unnoticed mixed into Merlot categories.
